Michael Albert

Activist, author, economic theorist, speaker

Michael Albert’s career as an ardent activist began in the 1960s while he was a student at MIT. By his senior year he had been elected Student Body President, and had led a number of demonstrations and other acts of civil disobedience. Albert became so involved in anti-establishment movements that he was kicked out of MIT before completing his senior year. In college he studied physics, but came to realize that his true calling was as an activist.

In 1978 Albert co-founded the South End Press, a book publisher committed to raising consciousness about social issues and providing information, analysis, and inspiration for activists. With Lydia Sergeant, Albert then established the monthly Z Magazine in 1987. The magazine's mission is to resist injustice, defend against repression, create liberty, and assist activist efforts for a better future. Z Magazine led to the creation of ZNet, an online hub for news, articles, activist information, and classes on subjects from participatory economics to regional politics.
