The Artwohl Family

In a small rural community bordering the suburbs, Dustin and Nicole Artwohl and their one-year-old son, Mason, are in many ways the embodiment of the American Dream. In their mid-twenties, married for three years and already expecting their second child, they pride themselves on middle-of-the-road conservative values: working hard for their family, and the small community that surrounds them.

Their story, however, has sadly become all too familiar to today’s generation of young adults starting their families. Both Dustin and Nicole must work to finance their modest lifestyle, leaving their child in the hands of daycare and television as a babysitter. The influence of parenting is perhaps the greatest contribution to any child’s life, and Dustin and Nicole's situation shows unequivocally the challenges that today’s generation of parents face. With brutal honesty Dustin and Nicole take us into their home to share their deepest concerns on how the media, advertising, and culture at large have influenced themselves and their child, and the economic forces that make parenting and raising tomorrow’s generation more and more difficult.
