Kalle Lasn

Author, designer, culture jammer

Kalle Lasn is at the forefront of a movement called “culture jamming”: an effort to reclaim our culture from corporations, advertising agencies and television stations which have, in Lasn's own words, “hijacked and taken our culture away from us.” He has produced a number of documentary films and “subvertisements” (anti-commercials spoofing popular commercials) that aim to inform the public about the true cost and impact of mass consumption. Subjects Lasn has explored include the destruction of old-growth forests in the Pacific Northwest, the fat content of fast food hamburgers, and the social pressures women face that are created by mass media imagery.

In 1989, Lasn created Adbusters. This reader-supported, not-for-profit magazine offers philosophical articles and activist commentary from around the world, on issues ranging from corporate media consolidation to the effects of anti-depressants. Focusing on how our mental environment is affected by social conditioning and indoctrination, Adbusters offers alternative perspectives to what is readily available elsewhere in the media.

Lasn aims to drop “Mind Bombs” (ideas that drastically challenge and change how people view the world) to create a culture and society that is at once inspiring, truthful and sustainable.
