STS9: Sound Tribe Sector 9

musicians, activists

Based in Northern California, STS9's five musicians are just as much a collective as they are a band. Hunter Brown, David Murphy, Jeffree Lerner, David Phipps and Zach Velmer have been performing together for over ten years, and have become one of the top touring bands in the nation. Their resume includes multiple studio albums, all of which emanate a ReGenerative undertone, from their critically acclaimed Artifact to their more recent releases Peaceblaster and Ad Explorata. In addition they have participated in numerous social and environmental movements and charitable organizations, including Conscious Alliance food drives and the Wounded Warrior Project, which aims to help severely injured service members of the US Military.

Most recently STS9 released PEACEBLASTER:THE NEW ORLEANS MAKE IT RIGHT REMIXES, a collection of 30 tracks, all donated by generous artists from across the globe, in an effort to build a home in New Orleans’ Lower 9th Ward. 100% of the proceeds from this album are donated to the Make It Right Foundation for this effort.

The band's roots are global - from Brown, Murphy, and Velmer’s upbringing in the suburbs of Atlanta, to Lerner’s childhood in rural Michigan, to Phipps’ formative years spent living in Japan with his parents. They provide a unique window into today’s generation as they lend their first-hand accounts on how homogeny, consumerism, globalization, our loss of history and other issues have personally affected their lives. We have come to see STS9 not only as a band, but as a group of individuals who have come together to create music with a deep understanding of how their art can inspire and act as a positive cultural force.
